A "ton" of air conditioning has nothing to do with weight. It's a cooling rate: one ton of refrigeration equals exactly 12,000 BTU/hr, the amount of heat needed to melt one short ton of ice in 24 hours. This calculator turns that rating into the horsepower class used by retailers across Southeast Asia.
Why 1 Ton Comes Out as 1.5 HP
Two different scales are in play, and neither divides neatly into the other. A ton is a precise engineering unit — exactly 12,000 BTU/hr. Aircon horsepower is a market convention anchored at roughly 9,000 BTU/hr per HP. Divide one by the other and you get 1.333 HP per ton.
But no manufacturer sells a 1.33 HP air conditioner. Every real unit is rounded onto a fixed ladder of model sizes, so a 1 ton machine reaches the showroom badged as 1.5 HP. The same rounding is why a "1.5 ton" and a "2 HP" unit are the same machine — both are 18,000 BTU/hr.

Notice that 0.75 TR and 1.5 TR land exactly on the ladder, while 1 TR and 2 TR need rounding. That irregularity is the source of most confusion — and it's why a straight multiplication tool gives you a number no shop will recognise.
The Physics Answer, and When You Need It
Search "1 ton to HP" and most unit converters return 4.72 HP. That figure is thermodynamically correct: 12,000 BTU/hr divided by 2,544.43 BTU/hr per mechanical horsepower gives 4.716 HP. It's the right number for a heat-balance calculation or a chiller plant study.
It is the wrong number for buying an air conditioner. No 1 ton room unit has anything close to a 4.7 horsepower compressor — modern compressors are far more efficient than the machines that gave the label its name. Tons, HP and BTU — Which Market Uses What
The unit on the box depends on where the unit is sold, not on the machine itself:
- Tons / TR — India, the Middle East, North America and most commercial HVAC specifications.
- Horsepower — Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and much of Southeast Asia for residential split and window units.
- BTU/hr — used almost everywhere on spec plates and in online listings, regardless of how the unit is marketed.
- kW cooling — Europe, Australia and Japan, and increasingly on inverter model datasheets worldwide.

TR in Commercial Systems — VRF, Chillers and Split Ducted
Larger installations almost always quote tonnage rather than horsepower, and the numbers climb quickly: a small office VRF outdoor unit might be 8 TR, a rooftop package 20 TR, a mid-size chiller several hundred. The conversion arithmetic is identical, but the horsepower ladder stops being useful much above 6 HP because residential model sizes simply don't extend that far.
For anything above roughly 36,000 BTU/hr, work in tons or kW and ignore the HP scale entirely. Above that point the calculator falls back to the plain divide-by-9,000 relationship rather than pretending a matching model size exists.
Tonnage Tells You Cooling, Not Electricity
A 1 ton air conditioner removes 12,000 BTU/hr of heat, but it draws nowhere near that in electrical power — typically 900 to 1,400 watts depending on efficiency and whether it's an inverter model.
