A horsepower figure on its own means very little without context. Three hundred horsepower is enormous in a hatchback, ordinary in a pickup and trivial in a locomotive. This chart puts common figures side by side so a number can be placed on a scale.

What Is the Average Car's Horsepower?

For a typical new passenger car sold today, somewhere around 180 to 200 HP is representative — though the average has climbed steadily for decades. A family saloon of the 1980s often made under 100 HP; its modern equivalent makes twice that while using less fuel, thanks to turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing.

Electric cars have pushed the average up further still, because electric motors deliver high output cheaply. A mainstream electric family car frequently produces 200–300 HP, a figure that would have been sports-car territory a generation ago.

Why Horsepower Alone Does Not Tell You Speed

A 400 HP lorry is slower than a 400 HP sports car by an enormous margin, because power has to move weight. That is why power-to-weight ratio is the more useful comparison, and why weight per horsepower is how racers usually frame it.

Torque matters too. A tractor's low output is delivered as enormous torque at very low RPM, which is what pulling a plough requires. Peak horsepower says nothing about where in the rev range the power arrives — see horsepower vs torque for how the two relate.

Finally, check which horsepower a figure uses. European brochures often quote PS, which is about 1.4% smaller than mechanical HP — our kW to PS converter covers that, and the HP to kW chart handles the metric conversion.

How this calculator is checked

Figures are representative ranges for each category rather than specifications for particular models, compiled from typical manufacturer output figures. Car categories use quoted crank horsepower. Kilowatt equivalents use 1 mechanical HP = 745.699872 W. Racing and specialist figures are widely published nominal values; Top Fuel output in particular is an estimate, since those engines are not measured on conventional dynamometers.
